The first team of Werder Bremen plays in the Bundesliga, the second team (Werder Bremen II) plays in the Regionalliga Nord. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by 16 vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. They took the name of the river which was located on one side of the football field. Werder Bremen has 39.100 members up to now.

Werder Bremen has played so far usually in the Bundesliga. They've won the Bundesliga four times so far and they've won the DFB-Pokal six times up to now. In 2004 Werder has won the last time the Bundesliga. Werder had also European success. They've won the UEFA Europa League in the season 1991-1992 and in the season 2008-2009 they reached the final.

Werder Bremen is still the most successful club in Northern Germany, although the recent success of Hannover 96. Werder has a rivalry with the club Hamburger SV.
